Texas

I took a two week road trip from California to South Carolina during which I drove through Texas for the first time. It was flat and beautiful and dry and hot and so huge.

Things old and new but mostly old

I just found a folder of images I’ve taken in the last year that I’ve been meaning to put up. They’re mostly old but I like them for what ever reason. So…

reviews of Personal Lives at Verge Gallery!

Square Cylinder and the Sacramento Bee had some nice things to say about the Personal Lives show at Verge Gallery last month.  Check out the full articles above and here’s a sneak peek from the Sac Bee …

Cynthia Yardley gives us fascinating images of interiors that allow us to contemplate what kind of people inhabit them. Made up of many small photos arranged in a grid so that you feel as if you are looking through windows, they are the most voyeuristic pieces in the show.

In one grouping, the anonymous inhabitant of a house is partly framed by a mirror in the entryway. Photographs and artworks on the wall around the mirror give us clues to his life – a picture of an older woman, perhaps a grandmother, and a shot of the Eiffel Tower are intriguing. Below them, the floor is cluttered with castoffs – tennis shoes, boots, Birkenstocks, backpacks – suggesting an active family of casual dressers, some perhaps students.

In another series of shots, we see the rather ornate interior of a living room or study with a picture of a military man at the center. Around the room are a curved dagger in an ornate scabbard, a sculpture of an Indian servant, and a formal chair. On the walls around the military man, 19th century prints of Indian regiments and battle scenes are hung over a photo of a multiracial family. The work offers a fascinating game of Clue as you try to figure out to whom the room might belong.

New Orleans

In early 2008 I took a week off to drive from Brooklyn down to New Orleans with Jackie Sumell and Jackson Durchfall to do some research, intox, and picture making.

Things

My show at Spazio 522 closes this Saturday the 13th. I’ll be there all day taking it down and wrapping it so if you’re reading this before Saturday stop by and say hi. I’ll have some pictures of the show soon. I donated a piece to Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco for their Pachanga 2007 auction in November. If you live there, go check it out and support a fantastic place. In the mean time, here’s two pictures:

1 millionth artist to move to Williamsburg

I’m safe and sound in Brooklyn. It’s fabulous here. The weather has really made some adjustments in it’s schedule for me and held off on the excruciatingly hot days, although the humidity is crazy. It even rained one day. I’ve been setting up my studio at home which has been really great.

My show “Seam-ingly” at 21 Grand Gallery in Oakland with Sarah Wagner is up until Sunday, September 9th. Go check it out! And many many warm thank yous to everyone who came to the opening to say goodbye and good luck. It was a fantastic send off for my trek out east. Which is a whole other story that I will illustrate with pictures. The trek was amazing. Prema, you are the best friend a girl could have. Thank you friend.

I have a solo show at Spazio 522 in Chelsea that opens Friday September 14th and runs until October 12th. I am very excited for the show, the space is beautiful. More on that soon.

In the meantime, here are some pictures from the road. A little note, a few years ago when my mom moved back to her native islands she gave me back all the ceramics I had done in high school. I didn’t want to throw them away so I packed them into the car and formulated a plan. Along the way to Brooklyn I left a piece in every state and took a picture. It’s like I still have them but now I don’t have to move them around with me every two years. Because I undoubtedly move every two years.

more, more, more one a day photographs

I LOVE things like this. When we lived in the Mission in SF there was a stop sign on our street that someone wrote “collaborate and listen” underneath the word STOP. It made me so happy. And this does too.
